Pleitos por pesos y medidas en la Real Chancillería de Valladolid (siglos XVI-XIX)

Abstract

El presente artículo analiza los litigios motivados por pesos y medidas previos a la invención e imposición del Sistema Métrico Decimal a través de los fondos judiciales del Archivo de la Real Chancillería de Valladolid. Para ello se ha desarrollado una doble estrategia metodológica: por una parte, cuantificar efectivamente el número de procesos que por esta causa llegaron hasta los jueces de la antedicha Chancillería y acercarse estadísticamente a su origen espacial, a la naturaleza y a la condición de las partes enfrentadas; por otra, analizar cualitativamente el contenido de dichos procesos, clasificarlos temáticamente y comprender las causas, las motivaciones, el fundamento jurídico y la estrategia judicial de cada parte, con un objetivo claro: caracterizar la litigiosidad metrológica de la mitad norte de la Castilla Moderna a través de su máximo tribunal.This article examines litigation over weights and measures prior to the invention and imposition of the Metric Decimal System, drawing on judicial records from the Archive of the Royal Chancellery of Valladolid. To this end, the study employs a dual methodological approach. First, it quantifies the number of cases brought before the judges of the aforementioned Chancellery for this reason, it statistically analyzes their spatial origin, and it examines the nature and status of the opposing parties. Second, it qualitatively investigates the content of these cases, categorizing them thematically and uncovering the causes, motivations, legal basis, and judicial strategies of each party. The ultimate goal is to characterize metrological litigation in the northern half of Early Modern Castile through the lens of its highest court.
