The emotional construction of extreme right in Spain. The regional elections in Andalusia, Catalonia, and Castile and Leon

Abstract

The purpose of this research is to determine the emotional construction of the far-right electorate, from a constructivist perspective, at different moments of political competition in Spain—specifically, in the regional elections of Andalusia in 2018, Catalonia in 2021, and Castile and León in 2022. For this purpose, research has been designed with a quantitative methodological approach based on the analysis of the results of three demographic studies carried out by the EIP-USC, in which the emotions expressed towards political parties acquire a fundamental value. The results obtained allow us to visualize the existence of an emotional regime common to VOX voters in our country, which presents different emotional architectures depending on the political moment. These architectures are shaped both by the presence of positive emotions towards their own political party and other right-wing and center-right parties, and by the notable presence of negative emotions towards left-wing and independent parties.La finalidad que persigue esta investigación es determinar la construcción emocional del electorado de extrema derecha, desde una perspectiva constructivista, en diferentes momentos de competición política en España. Concretamente, en las elecciones autonómicas de Andalucía 2018, Cataluña 2021 y Castilla y León, 2022. Para ello se ha diseñado una investigación con un enfoque metodológico cuantitativo sustentado en el análisis de los resultados de tres estudios demoscópicos realizados por el EIP-USC, en los cuales las emociones expresadas hacia partidos políticos adquieren un valor fundamental. Los resultados obtenidos permiten visualizar la existencia de un régimen emocional común a los votantes de VOX en nuestro país, que presenta diferentes arquitecturas emocionales según el momento político. Dichas arquitecturas se conforman tanto por la presencia de emociones positivas hacia su formación y otras formaciones de derecha y centroderecha, como por la notable presencia de emociones negativas hacia los partidos de izquierda e independentistas.
