El nacimiento del arte correo: dos décadas construyendo redes artísticas

Abstract

La correspondencia llegó a ser el soporte perfecto para algunos artistas de la segunda mitad del siglo pasado interesados en difundir las nuevas ideas experimentales y conceptuales. La decepción sobre el arte de masas, las élites artísticas y el mercado del arte, sumado a la creciente accesibilidad de las tecnologías como las fotocopiadoras y el boom de los medios de comunicación como herramientas culturales, llevaron a concebir y definir el mail art. A lo largo de este trabajo se revisarán los principales sucesos y artistas que fueron definiendo la red de arte correo y los proyectos que formaron parte de esta de manera internacional entre finales de la década de los cincuenta y principios de los ochenta, poniendo especial atención en los sesenta y setenta. El contenido se centrará en las propuestas tanto postales, como editoriales y las respectivas convocatorias que sirvieron para explorar la creación de una de las primeras redes artísticas a nivel global, la red eterna.

Correspondence became the perfect support for some artists of the second half of the last century who were interested in spreading the new experimental and conceptual ideas. The disappointment with the art of masses, the artistic elites and the art market, combined with the growing accessibility of technologies such as fotocopying and the boom of media as cultural tools led to the conception and definition of mail art. Throughout this project the main events and artists who defined the network of mail art and the propositions that were part of this from the late 1950s to the early 1980s will be revised, with special attention to the 1960s and ‘70s. The content will focus on the postal and editorial propositions, as well as the respective events that allowed the creation of one of the first global artistic networks, the eternal network.
