Abstract
Abordaremos a
War was, is, and will be a constant in human relations, however, not even the purest of realists dares to vindicate it without some kind of theoretical justification. The objective of this work is to know the history of ius ad bellum, the right to war, especially the doctrine of just war ,from its origin , within the Catholic Church, its crisis and its recovery for the current debate by MIchael Walzer, all this, from the perspective of political theory, by the hand of the authors who took care of discussing and fixing the doctrine, names like St. Thomas, Grotius, Vitoria or Vattel. We will also address the relationship of just war with the notion of sovereignty and the birth of the State, and finally the response of renaissance scholasticism, mainly Vitoria, to the challenges of its time, as well as the influence of authors such as Erasmus or Machiavelli from their conceptions of war.
