Abstract
En este artículo se observa el comportamiento del clero francés ante dos problemas: la educación de los sectores rurales más pobres y el acceso de estos a la cultura escrita. Se trata de ver, por un lado, las normas diocesanas sobre escuelas y maestros, en especial las de finales del siglo XVII y, por otro, los efectos de su aplicación, en general poco positivos. El clero era el responsable de la educación por delegación de la monarquía, pero sus distintos sectores asumieron esa tarea oscilando entre la caridad y la conveniencia, lo que explica la escasa atención hacia las clases rurales más débiles económicamente.
This article investigates the behaviour of the French clergy when faced with two problems: education of the poorest groups in country areas and their access to writen culture. On the one hand, it considers diocesan norms relating to schools and schoolteachers, especially towards the end of 17th century. On the other, it looks at the generally somewhat negative effets of applying them. The clergy were responsible for education, since the monarchy had delegated this task to them. However, the various layers of the clergy took in ways oscillating between charity and convenience. This explains the limited attention paid to the least well-off classes in rural zones.
