Abstract

Dendrimers are synthetic tree-like macromolecules composed of repetitive layers of branching units that emerge from a central core. They are prepared in a controlled iterative fashion, through generations with null dispersity, precise molecular weight, and discrete properties. Their globular architecture and size, in the nanometre scale, render dendrimers with applications in a plethora of fields from catalysis to material science. The synthesis of dendrimers is however a slow process that requires extensive purification steps. The objective is the design of a synthetic strategy to obtain dendrimers through an accelerated process. This project covers the synthesis of three generations and the final azide functionalization of a new block copolymer (PEG-Dendrimer family). As linear block we used a polyethylene glycol (PEG) with average molecular mass 5000 Da. The construction of the dendritic block has been carried out through a divergent method in whereby we used subsequent [3+2] azide-alkyne cycloadditions. Also, we studied several synthetic strategies for the construction of a repeating unit characterized by amide bonds to the subsequent formation of the dendritic block
