Abstract
This study presents a method for estimating the chronological age of children and teenagers based on the measurement of the height and width of eight mandibular teeth. 650 orthopantomographies of Spanish Caucasian individuals (330 boys, 320 girls) between 5 and 16 years old, obtained from the Faculty of Medicine and Dentistry of the University of Santiago de Compostela (USC, Galicia, Spain) were analyzed. Eleven groups were established by age ranges. The heights and widths of teeth 47, 46, 45, 44, 34, 35, 36 and 37 were measured. The variable height/width ratio of tooth 47 showed the highest correlation value with chronological age, so this variable was used to predict chronological age, applying simple linear regression and evaluating the model obtained using the coefficient of determination (R2). The height/width ratio of tooth 47 a mean and median error of 8.924-17 and -0.029 years for men and 5.770-17and -0.010 years for women, respectively. The mean and median absolute error was 0.944 and 0.810 years for men and 0.971 and 0.892 years for women, respectively. The age groups with the lowest and highest error were 6-9 years and 15-16 years, respectively, in both sexes. The anatomical relationship based on the height/width ratio of tooth 47 estimates the chronological age of subjects up to 16 years of age with an average error of less than one year. This optimum level of accuracy is comparable to that detected with other age estimation methods in children and teenagers, also having as added value the greater ease in determining measurements compared to other methods such as Cameriere's.
