El juego y la reproducción de la sociedad: cortejo y escarceos amorosos en el reino de Castilla durante la Baja Edad Media

Abstract

Jugar constituía una de las acciones más importantes y con más número de significados de la sociedad medieval: simple diversión, válvula de escape de tensiones, aprendizaje de las normas sociales, cohesión del grupo, etcétera. Y, además, cumplía un papel fundamental para la reproducción de la sociedad a través de una de sus variedades: el juego amoroso, especialmente durante la juventud. El siguiente trabajo analiza en primer lugar la concepción y caracterización del juego en la Edad Media hispana para comprender por qué los escarceos amorosos de la juventud pueden ser considerados como tal; y segundo, se analizan las principales acciones, momentos y desarrollo del propio juego sobre todo durante los siglos XIII al XV, y que facilitaban la formalización de nuevos matrimonios. Para poder realizar este análisis recurrimos a una metodología multidisciplinar utilizando fuentes de diverso tipo e información, especialmente literarias (Libro de buen amor, cantigas galaico-portuguesas y otras), pero también de carácter histórico (por ejemplo algunas de las obras normativas de Alfonso X, las Etimologías de san Isidoro o los sermones de san Vicente Ferrer) e incluso antropológico (el refranero del Marqués de Santillana y otras)

Play was one of the most important activities in medieval society and it held more meanings than most others: it was a way to have fun, to escape from stress, to learn about social norms and to foster group cohesion etc. One of its variants had a particularly important role in the reproduction of society: this was the love game and it was especially popular during youth. This paper begins by analyzing the way games were conceived and characterized in the Iberian Middle Ages, in order to understand why youthful love affairs can be considered a game. It then analyses the main activities, moments and development of the game itself, particularly from the thirteenth to the fifteenth centuries, and how this game facilitated new marriages. The paper adopts a multidisciplinary approach, using various types of sources and information. There is particular focus on literary sources (the Book of Good Love, Galician-Portuguese cantigas and others), but also those of a historical nature (for example some of the legal works of Alfonso X, the Etymologies of St. Isidore or the sermons of St. Vincent Ferrer) and even anthropological sources (the sayings of the Marqués de Santillana and others).
