La coproducción cinematográfica entre Galicia y Portugal 2019–2024

Abstract

El artículo examina la relación cinematográfica entre Galicia y Portugal, desde un punto de vista de la producción cinematográfica gallega se hace un recorrido por los factores que han permitido encontrar en el país luso uno de los mejores aliados para desarrollar una narrativa propia. La coproducción se presenta como una estrategia esencial para superar limitaciones económicas y técnicas, permitiendo a los cineastas y a las empresas de producción gallegas y portuguesas colaborar y enriquecerse mutuamente. Históricamente, la coproducción europea se ha consolidado como un medio para enfrentar la hegemonía estadounidense y mejorar el acceso a financiamiento. En el caso de Galicia y Portugal, la proximidad geográfica y los lazos culturales facilitan esta colaboración, aunque también hay desafíos, como el carácter periférico de ambos países y el pequeño tamaño de sus industrias cinematográficas. A nivel institucional, organismos como AGADIC y el Instituto do Cinema e do Audiovisual han promovido eventos para fomentar la cooperación y, en los últimos años se han establecido una serie de políticas públicas y un marco legal favorable que han permitido un crecimiento significativo del sector audiovisual gallego.

This article explores the evolving cinematic relationship between Galicia and Portugal, focusing on the role of coproduction in shaping a distinct Galician narrative. By examining key factors that have positioned Portugal as a crucial ally, this study underscores the strategic importance of cross-border collaboration in overcoming economic and technical limitations. Coproduction serves as a vital mechanism that enables Galician and Portuguese filmmakers and production companies to pool resources, share expertise, and enhance creative synergies. Historically, European coproduction has been instrumental in counterbalancing the dominance of Hollywood while expanding access to funding opportunities. In the case of Galicia and Portugal, geographic proximity and deep-rooted cultural ties provide a strong foundation for cooperative efforts. However, significant challenges persist, including the peripheral status of both regions within the broader European film landscape and the relatively small scale of their respective audiovisual industries. At the institutional level, entities such as AGADIC and the Instituto do Cinema e do Audiovisual have played a pivotal role in fostering collaboration through targeted initiatives and industry events. In recent years, the implementation of progressive public policies and the establishment of a supportive legal framework have contributed to the sustained growth of the Galician audiovisual sector.
